May I Borrow Your Pen?

Have you ever owned a pen that wrote extremely well? I mean it wrote so well that you were suddenly motivated to write, anything and everything. It's very likely that you kept the location of this high caliber pen classified. It was only to be used when absolutely necessary.

Then it happens, you are given a mission. The mission is to sign a document and return the pen to its safe location. The pen is retrieved from its classified location and the document is signed. The mission is almost completed! You are preparing to return the pen, and you hear the words  "May I borrow your pen?"

With great hesitancy, you hand the pen over and try not to stare the entire time the pen is being used. There's a distraction, your attention is diverted from the pen, and when you return your glance....dunh dunh, dunh, The pen burglar and your pen are gone!

Although comical, this is unfortunately a regular occurrence in the natural. The same theft, however, is occurring spiritually.

My tongue is the pen of a ready writer

Psalms 45:1

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Proverbs 18:21

These scriptures make it clear that the tongue has power to author our detriment or destiny, the choice is ours. Life experiences can bring happiness, joy, and laughter. They may also bring anger, rejection, disappointment, and sadness.

We get angry when someone intentionally hurts us or someone we love. We feel rejected when that beloved person walks away, and disappointed with unmet goals. Then there's the sadness felt, when we mourn the loss of a loved one.

When we neglect to take our broken heart to the cross to be healed by God; our emotions can place the matters of the heart on repeat, like a favorite song. The manifestation of this reality is evident to those closest to us, because often times they hear the details of the experiences that hurt us, repeatedly, for days, months, or even years.

The truth is, it happened. The truth is, it hurt. The truth is, it wasn't your fault. The truth is, you didn't deserve it. The truth is, the pain you are experiencing does not compare to the glory of your future.

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

Romans 8:18

We have an enemy whose goal is to abort our destiny. He desires for us to practice our pain, so that we never live to see the presentation of our future. His weapon of choice, our pen.

Above all else, guard thy heart; for out of it flows the issues of life.

Proverbs 4:23

Proverbs admonishes us to guard our hearts, because out of our hearts flow the issues of life. When we have issues of life, they most often flow, out of our heart, through our mouth. Another term we may be more familiar with is venting. We vent to verbally process how we are feeling at the moment, and that is ok. We are human, we have feelings, they get hurt. However, after the moment has passed, the enemy is waiting to ask the question " May I borrow your pen?"

This is where our decision of detriment or destiny hangs in the balance. The decision of detriment says " I am hurt, and I choose to keep my pain. I choose to never take it to God and allow Him to heal me. I choose to hold this pain close to me and talk about it, forever." When this decision is made, we allow the enemy to borrow our pen, our tongue. With our pen we write death by verbally repeating our pain everyday.

The decision of destiny says " Wow, I was not expecting this. I am broken in places I didn't know I could break.  I will seek wise counsel from a trusted sister or brother in Christ, and ask them to agree with me in prayer. I will take my brokenness to God and receive healing. I will say what God says about me and my situation, according to the Bible. I will speak life! " When this decision is made, we keep our pen for our own use. We write life by speaking life, even when we don't "feel" like it and even before change has manifested in our situation.

When we make a decision to follow Jesus we can expect trials and tribulations, which means we can expect pain. Our responsibility, is to guard our hearts, keep our pens, and write our destiny.

The righteous person faces many troubles, but the LORD comes to the rescue each time.

Psalms 34:19

For Reflection

  1. What is my tongue writing?

  2. Have I allowed the enemy to borrow my pen?

  3. Are there opportunities for me to improve on how I guard my heart?
